Course Content
Dealing with a sick or injured child is never easy, whether it’s your own or a child left in your care. Often the most stressful thing about the situation is not knowing exactly what to do, you can calm them down, soothe their worries but always the questions remain – have I done all I need to do? Should I be taking them to see a Doctor?

At Alpha Training our Paediatric First Aid courses are aimed at making you confident to make those decisions. You will be equipped to give any emergency care required but also with the knowledge of signs and symptoms to help you decide if medical attention is required.

Our Paediatric First Aid course is designed so that it can be run over a whole day or split into 2 sessions, this means it can be run in the evenings too.

The first session is aimed at breaking you in gently! We will equip you with the skills to carry out a primary and secondary survey. Primary survey is checking the airway and breathing. Secondary survey is completing a more detailed assessment of the entire body following a trauma. At this stage we also look at your responsibilities as a first aider – very important for you to know where your boundaries are.

Our Paediatric First Aid training covers a range of modules as standard but if there is something you would particularly like covered, for example if you child suffers from a specific condition, we are more than happy to cover additional material.

Our standard modules are;

  • Wounds and Bleeding
  • Head Injuries
  • Fractures, Sprains and Strains
  • Common childhood illnesses including Meningitis
  • Burns and scalds

Our second session is very practical and covers CPR and choking. We cover the guidelines for infants and children but also for adults as standard and include the use of a defibrillator (AED) in all our training. We use infant and adult manikins in our sessions to ensure you are confident in all aspects. Each participant has their own manikin to ensure maximum levels of practice.

The course runs from 9.30 – 5 and to ensure you get the most out of the practical elements there is a maximum of 8 participants per instructor and a maximum of 12 per course.

On completion of the course you will receive a certificate of attendance valid for 2 years.
